WHY IS THE MONACO F1 SCHEDULE DIFFERENT TO OTHER GRAND PRIX?
If you are new to F1, or have been watching F1 for quite some time, you might have realised that the Monaco Grand Prix has a slightly different schedule to other Grand Prix on the F1 calendar.
The biggest change to the Monaco Grand Prix weekend is the fact that the practice sessions begin on a Thursday rather than the usual Friday, and there is most definitely a reason for this...
The reason why the Monaco Grand Prix has shifted Friday's practice sessions to a Thursday is because of the traditional Ascension Day. Years ago, the Formula 1 Grand Prix would be held on this public holiday. The Principality of Monaco welcomed the F1 Grand Prix, as it proved to be highly beneficial to various local industries. But, there was a major problem...
Unlike other street circuits in the F1 Calendar, the Monaco track is literally smack-bang in the compact heart of the city. So, when racing takes place, many shops and residential areas are completely blocked off. To accommodate everyone, the Friday of the race weekend is now used to help shops and hospitality businesses to restock food and goods to prepare for the busiest weekend of the year.
