BMW MOTORRAD'S LATEST CREATION IS THE NEW RETRO-STYLE BMW R 12 G/S - AND IT'S AWESOME!
BMW Motorrad is back at it, and this time, they've reached into the archives, dusted off some legendary off-road DNA, and infused it with modern tech to create the all-new BMW R 12 G/S. A proper throwback to the iconic R 80 G/S, this machine is built to tear up trails, carve through twisties, and make you feel like an off-road hero - whether you’re actually good or just think you are. BMW’s history with off-road bikes is a saga of triumphs, dating back to the R 80 G/S in 1980. That machine rewrote the rules, proving that a boxer-powered adventure bike could dominate both dirt and tarmac. Fast forward to today, and the R 12 G/S captures that same rebellious spirit but with all the modern goodies you'd expect from a 2024 machine. From its long-travel suspension and cross-spoke wheels to its compact cockpit fairing and unmistakable silhouette, the R 12 G/S is as much a statement as it is a motorcycle. This is the bike for those who want their enduro ride to look as cool outside a café as it does caked in mud after a weekend on the trails. Underneath the retro styling lies BMW’s tried-and-tested 1,170 cc air/oil-cooled boxer twin, punching out 80 kW at 7,000 rpm and a solid 115 Nm of torque at 6,500 rpm. It’s got that signature boxer growl, a torquey midrange, and a left-side exhaust system that gives it an old-school rally vibe. This isn’t just a bike; it’s a rolling piece of Motorrad heritage that looks absolutely epic. And because modern riders demand modern tech, the R 12 G/S gets riding modes for every occasion. ‘Rain’ and ‘Road’ keep things sensible, while ‘Enduro’ and the optional ‘Enduro Pro’ dial things up for off-road lunacy. Dynamic Traction Control (DTC) and engine drag torque control (MSR) come standard, but if you’re feeling brave, you can switch off the assists and go full Dakar mode.
Whether you’re sitting, standing, or wrestling the bike through deep sand, the R 12 G/S is built to accommodate. The flat solo seat is standard, but BMW offers a pillion package, a Rallye seat, and adjustable handlebars with an optional 20 mm riser. Seat heights range from 860 mm to 895 mm, depending on how much legroom you need - or how much you want to intimidate shorter riders at the stoplight. For those serious about off-road, the ‘Enduro Package Pro’ throws in an 18-inch rear wheel (up from the standard 17-inch), beefier footpegs, and a high-mount silencer. But even in standard trim, the 21-inch front wheel, fully adjustable upside-down telescopic fork (210 mm of travel), and BMW’s iconic Paralever rear suspension ensure this thing is ready for serious terrain. BMW’s Shift Assistant Pro is available for seamless clutchless upshifts and downshifts, letting you keep the power flowing without interruption. It’s one of those features you didn’t know you needed - until you try it. And because adventure riding can get… unpredictable, BMW fitted the R 12 G/S with a serious braking setup. A twin-disc 310 mm front brake with 2-piston floating calipers works alongside BMW Motorrad ABS Pro, which keeps things composed even when leaned over in a corner. Out back, a single 265 mm disc with a floating caliper ensures you can scrub speed when needed - without drama. Rounding out the package is a classic round instrument cluster, a 12V socket for your gadgets, and LED lighting that includes a distinctive ‘X’-shaped headlight signature. Optional ‘Headlight Pro’ adds adaptive cornering lights because, let’s be honest, night riding through the woods is way more fun when you can actually see where you’re going. The new BMW R 12 G/S is a proper tribute to the past, wrapped in cutting-edge engineering. It’s a machine for those who appreciate old-school charm but demand modern performance. Whether you're blasting through trails, tackling a mountain pass, or just admiring it in your garage (if your wife lets you have one), this is a bike that delivers pure, unfiltered riding joy.
