FEDS DEMANDING OWNERS OF ILLEGAL GT-RS TO SURRENDER THEM TO BE CRUSHED

It is no secret that passionate Nissan Skyline GT-R owners have done some rather sketchy movies to obtain their pride and joy and import them into the United States, but in more recent times their fate has finally caught up with them and now the feds have issued a statement that requests that all illegally imported Nissan Skyline GT-Rs are to be surrendered and crushed!

For those of you who live outside of the United States, you have to understand why the traffic laws of the US are so against old-school GT-Rs in the first place. Its got nothing to do with the amount of power the car has which has been the most popular rumour of the last decade around the scandal. As a matter of fact, the Nissan Skyline GT-R R34 has less power than a new Honda Civic Type R so what can the actual reason be?

To cut a relatively long story short, the Nissan Skyline GT-R (specifically the R33 and the R34) are banned in the United States due to the fact that they don't meet the standard requirements of the 1988 imported vehicle safety compliance act. So these absolutely adored 90s JDM cars don't meet and comply with the relevant road safety legislations set out by that specific act and are therefore illegal to use on public roads.

But then why are there so many GT-Rs rolling around the streets in the last decade? Well, there are many reasons as to why that is, but the main one being a loophole where the imported vehicle registration centre in Florida bypassed the safety act right up until 2014 which has resulted in around 1500 R34 GT-Rs illegally imported and registered in the United States.

The latest news around this scandal is that the feds have now issued a statement that requests that all illegally imported Nissan Skyline GT-Rs are to be surrendered and crushed! However, if your GT-R is older than 25 years it can now be re-registered as a classic car and under the right circumstances can be legally registered to be used on public roads in the United States.
