HOW DOES LAMBORGHINI'S WEIRD STERRATO THING FARE AGAINST BMW'S M4 CS IN A DRAG RACE?
In the latest odd drag race match-up from the crazy crew at Carwow, we see Mat and the boys in a Germany vs Italy battle that’s made up of the mighty BMW M4 CS and one of the stranger things we’ve seen come out of the Lamborghini stable, the Huracan Sterrato. While the M4 CS is one of the top runners from the BMW stable, the Sterrato isn’t one of the best from the Italians. I mean it does have the right powerplant, but its speed is limited compared to the ‘regular’ Huaracan because someone in a white coat in the R&D department cleverly decided that the car’s performance should be limited because it was intended to be used on gravel roads and doing 300 km/h in that scenario is pretty much a death wish. Even Dakar cars are limited to 170 km/h. But is that a factor that will see the BMW pulling ahead of the Lambo? It could, because it really is a beast of a thing, especially seeing as it’s not a supercar but can offer up some pretty damn impressive performance. The powerplant has been tuned to produce a brilliant 405 kW with 605 Nm of torque and it uses an 8-speed M Steptronic transmission and the M xDrive intelligent all-wheel drive system that affords the car handling that lives up to the reputation of all things M. The whole package is properly quick, with the right driver at the wheel and the right drive mode engaged, the M4 CS is able to get from a standstill to the worldwide benchmark for performance of 100 km/h in as little as 3.4 seconds. The car is also capable of getting to 200 km/h in a mere 11.1 seconds, which is properly quick. In-gear acceleration, which is important for track cars, is also massively quick. The M4 CS can sprint from 80 km/h to 120 km/h in just 2.6 seconds in 4th gear, and an equally impressive 3.3 seconds in 5th gear. If the M Driver’s Package is optioned, the top speed is electronically limited to 302 km/h. The package tips the scales at 1,760kg.
When it comes to the Italian competitor, the Sterrato is a weird mix of an off-road car and a supercar. It’s lifted, cladded and has drive modes made to help the car excel off the usual tarmac playground. The Sterrato features widened bodywork, twin air deflectors in front of the side intakes, LED lighting, a forged roof rack, revised bumpers and sills, aluminium skid plates, a titanium roll-cage, carbon fibre bucket seats and aluminium floors. What it does have in its favour is that iconic Lamborghini V10 powerplant that’s been seen doing duty in all manner of Lambo for years now. It’s powered by a 5.2-litre naturally-aspirated V10 that puts down 449 kW and 560Nm. That power is sent to all four wheels via a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission. When you hoof it properly, the Sterrato can hit 100 km/h in 3.4 seconds, 0.1 off the time claimed for the M4 CS, and it has a top speed of 260 km/h. That’s not very high in the grand scheme of things though, that’s modern hot hatch territory, a good 42 km/h slower on top than the German rival. Even though it looks to be wider and higher than the BMW, the Lambo is lighter, tipping the scales at 1,570kg. We all know power-to-weight is a big factor in drag races, and on paper, it looks like the M4 CS has this battle in the bag. Of course, a fair bit of that race will come down to driver interaction and skills, even body weight can upset the outcome. Luckily none of the Carwow crew are heavyweights and they have extensive experience in testing weird cars over a 402 m piece of airport runway. Place your bets.
