IS THAT A SUPRAAAA? WHY YES IT IS, AND IT'S HAVING A BIRTHDAY. THE TOYOTA SUPRA TURNS 45!
It seems that for 2023, every other press release features either a car model anniversary, an iconic event anniversary or the anniversary of the creation of an automotive company. We’re six months in and they just keep on coming. The latest comes from the land of the rising sun where Toyota is now celebrating the anniversary of an iconic nameplate that was resurrected in recent years - the Toyota Supra. The Supra has now been exciting JDM fans for 45 years over five generations, starting with the 1979 release of the Celica Supra, a car that still looks way ahead of its time. Known as the Mk1 or A50, the first one featured a 2.6-litre inline-6 that was rated at a whopping 110 hp. Gen 2 dropped in 1982 with a 2.8-litre 5M-GE twin-cam straight-6. The revised bodywork was amazing; longer and lower with flippy headlights and flared arches. For some reason, I can only ever picture these in a burgundy shade of paint. The A70 MkIII arrived in 1986 and was the first true Supra after dropping the Celica name. This one was again a radical change from the predecessor and looked like a proper sportscar with amazing new aerodynamic lines, a 0.33 drag coefficient and in the top-spec a turbocharged inline-6 with a 24-valve head and a resulting 230 hp. You can still find these engines in many fast aftermarket builds. The most revered Supra, the A80 MK4 arrived in 1993 with the iconic 2JZ-GTE powerplant that was rated at 320 hp. As we all know this motor can push out well over 1 000 hp.
Take a look at the YouTube video from Sofyan Bey over at Redline Reviews, who was lucky enough to see the 45th-anniversary edition GR Supra in the metal. We really like these cars, when everyone was complaining about seeing a BMW-derived motor in the legendary Supra, we were still cheering it on. The fact that they've brought one out in a factory orange paint, a shade that happens to be a favourite shade, only makes a little jealous - click through and see if this one also says evil things to you: The 2024 Toyota GR Supra 3.0 45th Anniversary Is An Homage To The Fast & Furious | Redline Reviews
