LEWIS HAMILTON DRAG RACES A JET WITH HIS MERCEDES-AMG PETRONAS F1 CAR

Ok, truth time. How many of you have ever bothered to check out the sponsor logos on racecars and race gear? I know we’ve only done it when one of the companies involved makes news headlines for something, and so that means we didn’t really know that the IWC logos on the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula 1 cars and uniforms was for a watch company. Yeah, yeah, we’re aware that F1 appeals to a crowd where a large chunk have a rather envious disposable income and that these types often have a watch and show fetish. For many, the watches, nay timepieces from IWC Schaffhausen are investments too thanks to the Swiss quality as well as the company’s history of watchmaking that’s over 150 years old. When you learn this, it makes sense to see the brand associated with Formula 1. To capitalise their relationship with Lewis Hamilton the company recently put together a publicity campaign to promote its new line of watches under the Top Gun that were conceived as navigation instruments for pilots.

For this endeavour IWC and Mercedes-AMG Petronas teamed up for one of the coolest publicity stunts possible, drag racing Lewis Hamilton’s F1 car against a jet down a runway. You’ll see the car and jet line up properly and then it’s all systems go from both pilots. Now we all know how fast an F1 car can accelerate, and it does a great job off the line, but when the thrust kicks in on the jet you can see just how powerful it is. The video shows the launch, the middle and the end of the race but not in one take, and we also don’t know what distance the race was. What we do know it that it was awesome and we would have done stupid things to watch it happen live. What do you reckon about this match up? We love our cars and stats but we’d prefer if someone out there who has PhDs for their PhDs to do the maths and tell us some stats about the F1 car and the jet and how their performance compares. Just do it.

Take a look at the YouTube video that shows how a modern Formula 1 car performs when pitted up against a jet. To be fair it's a bit of a strange one, and you can't really say it's a proper drag race, but check it out for yourself right about here, down below: Lewis Hamilton in Epic IWC Drag Race with Top Gun Jet! | Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team
