THE NEW PORSCHE 911 GT3 RS IS 10.6-SECONDS FASTER THAN BEFORE WITH A 'RING TIME OF 6:49.328M

The latest Porsche 911 GT3 RS is the epitome of a racecar for the road, it features Porsche’s iconic normally aspirated flat 4.0-litre powerplant that affords the car a very healthy 386 kW of power with 470 Nm of torque that translates into a 0-100km/h dash of just 3.0-seconds with a massive top speed of 310 km/h. At the hands of the right driver, like Jörg Bergmeister the car is an absolute weapon on track. As is the norm when an automaker has something so damn good in their fleet the car and driver pairing headed to the legendary Nurburgring to put in a lap time to prove the car’s prowess on an open racetrack with the aim of being the best and fastest car in its class. We think Porsche has more than proved its point. The best thing about these kinds of lap record attempts is that us Porsche fans are able to immerse ourselves in how fast and scary the driving was because of amazing footage and telemetry.

The spec chosen for this record attempt was the 911 GT3 RS with the optional Weissach package that sees the car equipped with Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 R tyres in 275/35 R 20 up front and with massive 335/30 R21 rubber in the rear. Frank Moser, Vice President model lines 911 and 718, was spectating from the pit wall: “I’m incredibly proud of what the whole team has achieved during the development and testing of the new 911 GT3 RS, today Jörg Bergmeister brought everything together and unleashed the car’s full potential. The 911 can still surprise us and proves that the rear engine concept is still supremely suitable for high-performance sports cars.”  You’ll notice that the car’s claimed top speed is 310 km/h and on the rack it looked like it battled to cross the 290 km/h mark. The thing is that at 285 km/h the 911 GT3 RS creates three times more downforce than a ‘regular 911 GT3 at 860 kg. “We lost a little downforce due to the strong, sometimes gusting wind, but I’m still very happy with the lap,” says Bergmeister. “In the fast sections in particular, the 911 GT3 RS is in a league of its own. Here it’s on a level usually reserved for top-class racing cars. The car is also setting new standards in braking. Fast laps on the Nordschleife are simply so much fun in this car.”

“Today the 911 GT3 RS delivered what it had already promised at first glance – absolute excellence on the racetrack,” says Andreas Preuninger, Director GT cars. “Considering the far from ideal conditions, with a strong headwind on the long straight of the Döttinger Höhe and cool asphalt temperatures, we are satisfied with this time. The 911 GT3 RS is setting new standards for aerodynamics and the chassis. Never before has a road car embodied so much motorsport.”
