Wrapping cars became big business fast, you can even see some of the most popular YouTubers and their rise to fame thanks to documenting the cool and fancy wraps they created for all manner of cars. Over the years, one of the most popular wrap choices ended up being matte-finish wraps. Even now, if you head to a motoring event of any decent size, you’re almost guaranteed to spot a matte black car of some sort. At e recent event I spotted a matte black car, a matte green car and even a matte silver one. While most vinyl wraps are done for aesthetics, some are actually done to protect the paintwork more than anything else. It seems automakers have caught on to this trend and have even offered new models with a matte paint finish like BMW’s Frozen paint option and the same on the Mercedes-Benz EQC. It’s quite a commitment to have matte paint, but that’s quite permanent. Well, you could always wrap those cars in any colour too I guess. Ford has done things a bit different. The automaker has decided to change things up and now offers a wrap at the factory level but this time round you can now completely change the looks of a new Mustang by having it delivered in a matte finish thanks to having a matte clear wrap added as part of the car’s option list. Adding yet another way to personalise your new Mustang is a great way to pull in a few new customers. Of course, while aesthetics are the main reason, this option also protects the underlying paint and as a direct result, it helps keep the car’s value as high as possible so you can score when it comes time to trade-in or up. The matte clear film can be added to any of the new Mustang paint options and is even covered by Ford’s standard factory warranty. That’s pretty cool.
This new addition to the new Mustang’s options list joins other cool personalisation options that include things like wheel choices, interior colours, contrasting seatbelts, factory-painted brake calipers, and a host of bold and exciting paint colours. The 2024 Mustang Matte Clear Film is a product of PPG Industries, widely regarded as one of the world’s premier automotive protection films. The wrap is designed to withstand harsh detergents used at hand or touchless car washes, as well as road salt, bird droppings, bug splatter, and asphalt residue. The best of them are also self-annealing, meaning any small chips or slices will repair themselves. While the wrap is available for a plethora of new Mustangs, it isn’t available with the GT California Special package, or the optional graphics packages on the Mustang EcoBoost and GT. Also, customers who order the Mustang Matte Clear Film for the awesome Mustang Dark Horse will only be able to have it applied if they forgo the standard Hood Accent Stripe or the optional Painted Racing Stripe. The Matte Clear Film is available on the EcoBoost, GT, and Dark Horse in all factory paint colours, with first deliveries to begin in June and this will extend to all Mustang convertible models in the fourth quarter of 2024. There’s no word on the price of the option locally, but the US pricing gives a bit of an indication. Stateside it will cost $5,995, which when translated into Rands is rather scary at roughly R115,000. It does come with the same 3-year/36,000-mile factory warranty that applies to all 2024 Mustang cars. “Mustang has been about driving freedom and freedom of expression for 60 years, and our new Matte Clear Film provides a whole new way for customers to make Mustang their own,” said Laurie Transou, Mustang's Chief Program Engineer.
