THE 2024 FORD MUSTANG GT CALIFORNIA SPECIAL IS AN AWESOME BLEND OF MODERN MUSCLE WITH CLASSIC CUES.
With the iconic Mustang about to celebrate its 60th Birthday, we can expect some cool things to come out of Dearborn, Michigan factory. Like what you see here, the 2024 Ford Mustang GT California Special. The chaps at Ford have managed to combine all the modern Mustang things we love with some classic styling to create a rather interesting Mustang drop-top. “The original California Special package was geared toward California’s optimistic and carefree driving culture. We’re refocusing on those elements for the 2024 Mustang GT California Special, which brings vibrant style that looks as at home on Colorado Boulevard as it does on the Pacific Coast Highway. Rave Blue is such a distinct and exciting color, it really does make the California Special stand out not only from other Mustang models, but from previous California Special models.” says Mustang Brand Manager, Joe Bellino. To make this Mustang special, a host of visuals have been created. The exterior is all 2024 Mustang when it comes to the lines, lights and styling, but the added Rave Blue details change things up a fair bit. Up front, this signature colour appears on the nostril intakes, and these in turn are flanked by a new horizontal-slat grille complete with low gloss black strakes. For a little contrast, the angular headlights are surrounded by black bezels. Mustang GT California Special-specific graphics in a Medium Light Rave Blue have been combined with both high-gloss and low-gloss black accents, these were added to the lower body sides and contract the factory paint just right. The 5.0-litre badge denoting engine size is found on the front fenders and the GT badge at the back adds Rave Blue outlines to black the centers. Much like the GT Performance Package, there is a Performance Pack-specific badge. The GT/CS badge in the grille is also finished in Rave Blue. The California Special package is available with two 19-inch wheel options, the standard Carbonized Gray wheels have a GT/CS pad-printed logo in Rave Blue on them, while the optional Performance Pack wheel combines a machined face with Rave Blue pockets as seen in these images. We do not like.
As expected there are also visual changes to the interior of the California Special. The stitching on the seats, door cards and steering wheel is in a shade of blue matching the Rave Blue accents, but it’s called Raptor Blue. Other Blue accents are found throughout the California Special package’s interior, where perforated Navy Pier upholstery and Ebony Black leather cover the seats. Further adding to the overall styling theme is dual-colour contrast stitching of Metal Gray threads that accompany the Raptor Blue bits. There’s also a California Special IP badge and some GT/CS floor mats to round out the interior changes. “Mustang has a rich well of special edition models to draw from, and we’ll continue to reinvent them for a new audience. From the track-ready Dark Horse to the world-beating Mustang GTD, Ford is elevating the Mustang for all audiences. The new, modern Mustang GT California Special is a perfect example of our drive to build a Mustang for every customer.” continues Mustang Brand Manager, Joe Bellino. One cool part about this is that it’s available as an optional package over and above the open-top Mustang’s regular sales price, which means it won’t be limited in numbers, anyone can have one. The California Special package adds just under R40,000 to the sales price of a Mustang GT Premium and is available in Coupe and Convertible body styles with either the six-speed manual gearbox or the optional 10-speed automatic transmission. We don’t think this will be an option here in SA, but we’re sure Ford SA will have some optioned like this Stateside so that a few can be brought in ready to go.
Take a look at the YouTube video that shows off the latest incarnation of the Ford Mustang GT California Special, an iconic name that now blends the best of the modern Mustang with some classic and iconic styling. It's an interesting look, but we're not quite convinced about that wheel style just yet. It's the only thing we'd change on the car.
