SIMOLA HILLCLIMB 2024 - ANOTHER ONE FOR THE BOOKS! CHECK OUT THE INSANE CARS AND ACTION!
SA’s best motorsport event recently took place, the annual Simola Hillclimb and this 14th running was just like the rest - just brilliant. There are some out there who believe there are better racing events in SA than Simola, but they’re wrong. The venue, the running of the event and the calibre of cars and drivers is second to none, and the action is always brilliant, evident by the number of people who tune into the live stream as well as the attendance of the international HillClimb Monsters crew who only cover the world’s best hillclimb events. The event takes place over a weekend with race action from Friday to Sunday along the 1.9 km-long stretch of road in Knysna. Things start off with Classic Car Friday which, as the name suggests sees older classic cars racing up the hill, and then things get more heated on the following two days with the more modern race cars trying to tame the hill, the best of which would battle it out for the overall King of the Hill title. There are a few iconic rivalries in this battle, with one top one being a GTR vs GTR fight starring BB Mororsport’s Armageddon and Scribante Racing’s Sherriff, but this year both cars suffered component failures which left the top honours open to a few other ridiculously powerful cars. That’s not to say that the cars that did claim the top spots only managed to do so because of the retirements, far from it. The top 10 cars were extremely quick with mere thousandths of seconds between them. The Sherriff damaged a 4th gear and Armageddon lunched the transmission, both being too large a repair job trackside, especially with such limited time. Attention went to the likes of Pieter Zeelie in his monster Toyota MR2, the Joubert brothers in their bonkers Lotus builds - one Ferrari-powered and the other Honda-powered - and also Devin Roberston in another Lotus, the GT-R-powered Czank Racing car.
