WANT AN OVERVIEW OF THE MERCEDES-AMG GT 63 BY LEWIS HAMILTON? WELL HERE'S ONE ANYWAY.
The Mercedes-AMG GT is the pinnacle of the AMG range. It’s one of the best Grand Tourers on the planet, and every time we see a new addition to the evolution of the car we’re blown away. While the name GT does translate to Grand Tourer, these cars are more supercar than tourer thanks to a superb powerplant and a brilliant chassis along with great power-to-weight and optimum weight balance. The long, low and wide Mercedes-AMNG has been around for a little over ten years now and has been seen in a few different trim and spec levels that start off with the “base” model AMG GT. Some of these have been tweaked and fiddled with to create more special cars, the AMG GT C offers more performance, as does the AMG GT S (Sport). The AMG GT R is the day version that has all the bells & whistles, more power, refined suspension, improved braking and tweaks to the bodywork and aero. There’s even a model higher up on the model ladder, the AMG GT R Pro, and this one is the same as the GT R but the underpinnings have been tightened up, weight has been shaved where possible and the setup is more suited to kicking ass during open track days. The end result makes it one of the best-looking cars ever created, EVAR! You can tell there’s a little personal bias in that statement, but I’ve yet to see another car in this class that stirs the soul as much. There are ten of them here in SA, so if you spot one out and about, you’re lucky. Two of the 10 are based at the AMG Driving Academy based at Zwartkops Raceway in Pretoria. The latest incarnation of the Mercedes-AMG GT was revealed a little earlier this year, and while the rest of us are waiting for it to be revealed in GT R Pro specification, Mercedes-Benz is doing the most to promote it using all the tricks in the marketing book. The latest marketing exercise involved one of the best tools (haha) the company has at its disposal - Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS F1 Team driver Sir Lewis Hamilton.
As part of their AMG Uncovered YouTube series that covers all things AMG, the powers that be roped in Hamilton to give us his thoughts on the all-new AMG GT, and if there’s anyone who can give a proper insight into one of these cars that was conceptualised and created during his stint as the team’s best F1 driver, it’s Hamilton. In the video, the seven-time world champion takes us on an explorative look inside and outside the Mercedes-AMG GT 63. The man also lets us in on what he thinks are essential details and features of the car before going on to discuss all things Hamilton in a sort of Q&A. For Hamilton fans, this is an interesting video that’s worth a watch, and for those who are fans of the brand and not the F1 man, I’d say it gets a 7 out of 10 for the Mercedes-AMG content. As a little reminder on what makes this version of the AMG GT, the 63 4MATIC+ special, it’s powered by that iconic twin-turbocharged 4.0-litre V8 that in the 63 is tuned to produce a powerful 430 kW of power with torque measuring in with a mighty 800 Nm. This isn’t even the best version of the car we’ll see, but it’s still capable of getting from a standstill to the benchmark 0-100 km/h in as little as 3.2 seconds, and when you take it through all the gears in the ultra-quick 9-speed dual-clutch transmission, it will top out at an electronically limited 315 km/h. The car is amazing in every way, so much so that you’d expect it to be the daily driver for Sir Lewis, if we were contracted to Mercedes-AMG we’d make sure that one of these cars should be thrown in as part of the pay package, but oddly that’s not the case. I guess it's because he’s getting on in years and prefers to have an easier drive. Hamilton’s daily driver is actually a Mercedes EQC SUV…
