SOMEONE FINALLY STRAPPED A BUGATTI CHIRON SS TO A DYNO - YOU WON'T BELIEVE WHAT HAPPENED!
The Bugatti Chiron Super Sport is a serious powerhouse, an iconic car that represents the best in motoring, it’s the ultimate street-legal car. With production limited to just 30 units - overall there are 500 units in different specs - but there were only 30 units of the Big Daddy 300+ model. The Chiron is the Bugatti that’s most well-known for smashing records, this beast made headlines with a verified top speed of 304.77 mph (490.48 km/h) in a Super Sport-spec car with multiple Daytona 24-hour and 1988 24 Hours of Le Mans winner Andy Wallace at the wheel. This insane top speed was the first time a hypercar could break the elusive 300-mph barrier. Under the hood is an engineering marvel in the form of a quad-turbocharged W16 with an 8.0-litre capacity that’s rated at a monstrous 1,600 hp (1,177 kW) with a powerful 1,600 Nm of torque. The Super Sport features an advanced quad-turbo system optimised for power, each turbocharger is sequentially boosted, which smooths power delivery and minimizes lag. It features a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission, delivering all that power to an all-wheel-drive system. The Super Sport also includes a reworked suspension with lower spring rates and revised dampers compared to other Bugatti models, which improves high-speed stability and affords the hypercar well-balanced cornering agility. The Super Sport also features an extended tail compared to the standard Chiron, and it’s crafted specifically to reduce drag at high speed. The exhaust setup is unique as well, with a twin-pipe design exiting from the rear, which aids both in cooling and in aerodynamic flow. It’s packed with advanced materials like carbon fibre throughout the body and chassis, which keeps the weight manageable for something this powerful. Inside, it’s luxuriously trimmed, balancing out the hypercar ferocity with the luxury touches Bugatti is known for.
With 1,600 hp on tap, the Chiron SS is among the world’s most powerful hypercars, and with the amount of performance records it’s racked up, there’s no reason to dispute it. The thing is, it might not actually make that power. That’s not to say it makes less power, it could be making more. These days we’re seeing performance cars being strapped to dynos the world over and they seem to be making more power than the manufacturer claims. Even here in SA, we’ve seen some performance models make the rated power figures at the wheels while being around 5000 feet above sea level. Logic then dictates that these cars would make even more power at sea level. We like this, a lot. The cars that YouTubers usually test with dyno runs are range-topping models from the regular brands, but seeing a higher-end supercar or hypercar on the rollers is quite rare. We’re not sure why this is, it’s certainly not for lack of access to the cars, maybe there’s a clause in the paperwork that doesn’t allow these guys to try and verify the power figures, it may even be a restriction put on the owners. Whatever it is, there are some YouTube channels that can get away with things like this even if manufacturers don’t approve. Like the crew from The Hamilton Collection. These guys have an absurd collection of cars that’s constantly changing and evolving, and they like to drive the cars as they were intended. It makes sense then that these are the first chaps to strap a Bugatti Chiron Super Sport to a dyno to test the power output. They took their Chiron SS through to Canonball Garage for the exercise, and as the most clickbaity heading we’ve ever used attests, the results are interesting. Before clicking through to watch, make a guess as to what the power output at the wheels will be. We were close-ish.
Take a look at the YouTube video that answers questions true motoring fanatics have been asking since the Chiron SS set that top speed record back in 2019 - does the car actually make 1,600 hp as per the marketing material?
