THE NEW AUDI Q3 SPORTBACK HAS ARRIVED - QUITE A LOOKER PACKED WITH DIGITAL TECH AND HYBRID POWER. IT'LL SELL.

The Audi Q3 has been a cornerstone of the premium compact SUV segment for more than a decade, and now the third generation is here. Audi has sharpened the design, packed in cutting-edge technology, and introduced electrified powertrains to ensure the Q3 remains not just competitive, but a leader in its class. With over two million units sold worldwide since its debut, the Q3 is one of Audi’s most important models. CEO of Audi AG, Gernot Döllner, calls it “a renewal of an important model family,” and with good reason. From its bold styling to its new plug-in hybrid offering with an electric range of up to 119 km, the Q3 has grown into a smarter, more refined companion for modern life.

Audi has given the new Q3 a bolder stance with a wide Singleframe grille, slimmer headlights, and cleaner proportions that balance athleticism with elegance. Viewed from the side, a sharp shoulder line divides the body into light and shadow, emphasising both strength and sophistication. Customers who want something with extra attitude can opt for the Q3 Sportback, which drops the roofline by 29 mm compared to the SUV for a sleeker, coupé-like silhouette. At the rear, optional digital OLED taillights with animated sequences and Audi’s illuminated rings give the Q3 a futuristic presence that sets it apart from rivals.

Lighting plays a starring role here. For the first time in the compact class, the Q3 offers digital Matrix LED headlights featuring micro-LED modules. Beyond sharper illumination, the system integrates with driver assistance functions — meaning the car doesn’t just light the road, it communicates with it. Distinctive light signatures, day or night, ensure that the Q3 is instantly recognisable.

Inside, it’s a comfort meets digital luxury, Audi has taken lessons from its larger models and shrunk them into the Q3’s cabin. A full-width digital dashboard, new steering wheel controls, and intelligent space management create a cabin that feels both cutting-edge and practical. A first in this segment: acoustic glazing on the front windows, keeping the cabin whisper-quiet even at speed. Storage has been rethought, too, with more flexible compartments, while the rear seats can slide and recline for optimum versatility. Luggage space impresses too, offering up to 1,386 litres in the SUV and 1,289 litres in the Sportback when the rear seats are folded. Tech enthusiasts will love the Audi MMI system with a crisp display, connected services, and natural voice control. Rear passengers aren’t left out either, with Wi-Fi connectivity and the option to pair Bluetooth headphones directly to the rear screens.

The new Q3 launches with a choice of engines tailored to different needs:

1.5 TFSI (110 kW) with mild-hybrid technology for efficient everyday driving.

2.0 TDI (110 kW) for long-distance comfort and economy.

Q3 e-hybrid (SUV and Sportback) with 200 kW combined output, capable of up to 119 km electric range (WLTP) thanks to a large 25.7 kWh battery. Charging is quick, too, with DC fast-charging up to 50 kW available.

This makes the plug-in hybrid one of the most compelling options in the compact premium SUV market, with enough range to cover most commutes without ever using fuel. Audi has engineered the new Q3 for a smoother, more confident drive. The updated suspension balances comfort and precision, with optional sports tuning and adaptive damper control for those who want sharper handling. Driver assistance systems have taken a major leap forward. Highlights include the Adaptive Driving Assistant Plus for semi-automated driving on highways, an interior driver camera to detect drowsiness and distraction, Reverse Assist for easy manoeuvring out of tight spots, and even Trained Parking that allows the car to learn and replicate your common parking manoeuvres.

The new Audi Q3 SUV will hit European markets first, with the 1.5 TFSI 110 kW entry model starting at €44,600, or around R920,000 if you convert directly. We’ll have to wait and see how the world’s mad tariffs affect things on local shores.
