80S PORN FETCHES GOOD MONEY NOW, ESPECIALLY WHEN ITS A 1987 PORSCHE 959!
When it comes to auctions, one of the biggest companies that put cars under the hammer, and in the first two weeks of January 2024 they will be hosting the Kissimmee auction in Florida. Held in Kissimmee, Florida, 2024 marks the 25th anniversary of the annual auction that has the claim to fame of being the world’s biggest collector car auction. In just 13 days, more than 4,000 cars will be auctioned off, and the list of cars in the lot is mind-blowing. There are always a few flagship cars in these auctions, and one of them is pure 80s porn and it comes in the form of a 1987 Porsche 959. The Porsche 959 is one of the most iconic Porsches ever thanks to the styling that was a massive departure from the regular 911-style that the German automaker is famous for. The 959 was Porsche’s answer to the Lamborghini Countach and the Ferrari F40, giving the three most well-established supercar makers the top spot in the game. It had a production run of just 292 units spread over Komfort and Sport spec, which makes them worth quite a pretty penny these days. In the late 80s, these cars were sold for $300,000, and they were actually a loss for Porsche because the cars reportedly cost double that to produce. It was worth it though, having a car that could compete with Ferrari and Lamborghini was worth it. This car is in Komfort spec, and it utilises a 2.85-litre twin-turbocharged flat 6 mated to a 6-speed manual transmission with power sent to the rear wheels. There’s 331 kW and 500 Nm on tap, and the car can hit 100 km/h in just 3.9 seconds and has a massive top speed of 319 km/h. This was from the late 80s, remember.
This one that’s coming up for auction at Kissimmee is a 1987 Porsche 959 Komfort that was completed on April 13, 1988. It wears S7 Silver Metallic paint and has a full black leather interior and has the optional alarm system and electronically adjustable heated seats. After completion, the 959’s first port of call was in France where it stayed for a while. In May 2002 the car was shipped to the U.S. to Canepa Design in Scotts Valley, California. While at Canepa Design, it received a “Stage One” engine upgrade that saw fitment of new Garrett turbos and wastegates, an ignition and fuel system upgrade, a new engine management, an alternator charge system and battery module, titanium heat shielding and a redesigned stainless exhaust to take the car to 448 kW from the original 331 kW. While there, the OEM hydraulic suspension had become dodgy with age and it was replaced with a coilover suspension setup from the 959 S. In its 35 years, this 959 has only covered 14,679 miles (23,624 km) so it’s still a puppy. The car is California smog-legal and comes with a rare multipiece tool kit, owner’s manuals, two large service binders from Canepa, a copy of the COA, import documentation and a warning triangle contained in bags matched to the interior leather. While these cars were sold at a loss for the aforementioned $300,000, this one has proven to be quite the investment with some rather healthy appreciation. The 959 Komfort is touted to sell for between $1,850,000 and $2,000,000, but on the day, anything can happen. We guestimate it will pull in $2,200,000…
