ROLLS-ROYCE PHANTOM CHERRY BLOSSOM: A BESPOKE MASTERPIECE INSPIRED BY JAPAN’S FLEETING BEAUTY
When Rolls-Royce builds a one-of-one commission, it's not just a car; it’s a rolling work of art, a personal statement, and in this case, a poetic tribute to nature’s ephemeral beauty - that’s typical fancy Rolls-Royce talk to say it’s inspired by nature. Enter the Phantom Cherry Blossom, an exquisite creation inspired by the fleeting elegance of Japan’s iconic Sakura season. This bespoke Phantom Extended, meticulously crafted for a discerning Japanese client, captures the spirit of Hanami - the cherished tradition of celebrating cherry blossoms in full bloom - through breathtaking embroidery, hand-painted details, and unparalleled craftsmanship. Cherry blossoms have always held cultural significance in Japan, symbolising renewal, impermanence, and the beauty of living in the moment. Their almost instantly recognisable petals bloom for a short period each year, serving as a gentle reminder to embrace the present. For the Phantom Cherry Blossom’s owner, these blooms represent treasured family memories spanning generations. This commission was conceived as both an heirloom and an immersive experience - a rolling embodiment of tradition, artistry, and personal legacy. The journey to bring this vision to life began three years ago when Rolls-Royce’s Bespoke Collective met with the commissioning client in Japan. The brief was clear: Craft a Phantom that highlights the magic of Hanami, capturing the serenity and beauty of a cherry blossom tree in full bloom. The result? A masterpiece that seamlessly blends Eastern philosophy with the world’s finest automotive craftsmanship. Step inside, and the Phantom Cherry Blossom unveils its breathtaking interior, where embroidery, texture, and light converge to create a sensory experience unlike any other. The pièce de résistance? A bespoke Starlight Headliner featuring an embroidered cherry tree, its delicate white blossoms appearing to float in midair. This intricate embroidery, requiring over 250,000 stitches and three weeks of meticulous craftsmanship, extends throughout the cabin, flowing onto the rear doors and the Privacy Suite partition.
The embroidered cherry tree itself is a marvel of technique. Using an offset tatami stitch - a nod to traditional Japanese weaving - the branches intertwine in a seamless flow, wrapping around the rear passengers. Adding a new dimension to Rolls-Royce’s already peerless embroidery expertise, the Phantom Cherry Blossom introduces the marque’s first-ever three-dimensional petal embroidery. Sculpted by hand, these tactile petals cast soft shadows, subtly shifting in the ambient lighting to create a living, breathing artwork within the cabin. Even the bespoke umbrellas hidden within the Phantom’s doors carry the theme forward, lined with a falling petal motif - a discreet yet evocative touch that elevates the ownership experience. The Phantom Cherry Blossom’s exterior is equally refined, finished in Crystal over Arctic White, a luminous paintwork choice that serves as the perfect canvas for the subtle yet striking hand-painted coachline. Flowing along the Phantom’s elegant profile, this line tapers into a delicate cherry blossom motif, an understated invitation to the extraordinary craftsmanship that lies within.
“Cherry blossoms are cherished in Japan as a symbol of the ephemeral nature of life and the beauty of transience. With this magnificent commission, we translate an internationally renowned moment into our pinnacle motor car, Phantom, with exquisite embroidery comprising more than 250,000 stitches. For the first time at Rolls-Royce, we have applied three-dimensional embroidery that gives the falling flower petals a tactile, sculptural quality. Developed using ancient Japanese stitching techniques, this motor car represents a deeply personal memory for the client and demonstrates the power of Bespoke in uniting individual meaning, heritage craftsmanship and modern artistry,” says Martina Starke, General Manager, Bespoke Design, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars
