THE G90 BMW M5 IS A BRILLIANT ALL-ROUNDER - NOW MANSORY GIVES IT VISUALS TO MATCH. WIN OR FAIL?
We’re fans of Mansory. Sure, they are known for going over the top with some of their builds, but the level of that top is dependent on your definition of where the top is. I hail from Kempton Park, and on the East Rand there ain’t no such thing as over the top. I loved the Max Power age of body kits and big wings and louvres and vents and sound installs, and scissor doors. Mansory is a lot like that, except for people with a much bigger bank account. The German aftermarket specialists have created kits for most of the coolest and most popular modern cars, and because they target the range-toppers, the components and kits they create are made from the best materials money can buy. Carbon fibre was always the order of the day, but with Lamborghini adding forged carbon to their build materials, and Toyota adding it to the roof of their Yaris GR, more and more people wanted it. Mansory quickly figured out how to make it work and started creating components and body kits for some special cars. One of the coolest they created was the absolutely stunning Mansory First Edition, which was based on the Mansory MC20. The already great-looking supercar was given a full forged carbon kit that managed to make the car look even better. Since then, the aftermarket company has used forged carbon to enhance loads of different cars, some cool, some just OK. This latest offering from Mansory used forged carbon just right, and the effects on the new latest incarnation of the BMW M5, the G90, are actually pretty cool and not in the usual over-the-top fashion that Mansory is known for. This new M5 is a rather good-looking thing, and that’s elevated a fair bit after the MANSORY fiddling. The array of lightweight add-on components made of carbon fibre, ultra-light forged rims called the FV10 Black Glossy in 22-inches, fills the corners just right.
The forged carbon bits cover the exterior of the car, and they’re all pretty tame, but at the same time, they manage to take the BMW M5 up a few levels. Ok, they’re tame if you don’t look at the new bonnet. It’s the only part that could be seen as being over the top in typical MANSORY fashion, but the Kempton in me thinks it’s a stunning piece of kit. For reals, just look at it. Performance also gets a little bit of an upgrade. Power rises from the standard output of 535 kW to 625 kW, and the torque rises from a cool 1,000 Nm to 1,150 Nm. All of this power is given a better soundtrack thanks to a full aftermarket exhaust that ends in a trio of centre-exit pipes. The G90 M5 is a beast, the combination of combustion engine and electric motor adheres to the same principle as the drive system in the BMW M Hybrid V8 endurance racing machine. The ability of the electric motor to generate its power instantly and the intelligently controlled interplay of the combustion engine and motor ensure the M HYBRID system responds without delay to every movement of the accelerator. The linear power delivery typical of BMW M models is found here in particularly compelling form. The eight-cylinder engine can spin to a maximum 7,200 rpm as the new BMW M5 treats its driver to the sensation of relentless power development into the upper reaches of the load and speed ranges. Top speed is limited to 250 km/h as standard, but the limiter can be raised to 305 km/h if the optional M Driver’s Package is specified. We’re sure it’s a little quicker after the MANSORY treatment though, which put it right in the middle of supercar territory - for a business-class performance saloon.
