THE USA-ONLY 911 CARRERA GTS CABRIOLET AMERICA EDITION HAS ARRIVED

Porsche has a huge client base in North America, and with the Zuffenhausen-based automaker offloading over 70 000 units for the 2021 retail year, it makes complete sense to create a special limited edition Porsche specifically for the US market. Enter the 911 Carrera GTS Cabriolet America. As you can see from the images, the base for this special car is the 911 Carrera GTS Cabriolet and under the skin we find that things remain untouched, and so the open-top car features the same tight high-performance chassis and powertrain, and it can only be had with a seven-speed manual transmission with power directed solely at the rear wheels. “Passion for driving a Porsche runs deep in the United States. In particular, there is something special about hitting the road in an open-top 911 with a manual transmission that fits perfectly here,” says Porsche Cars North America President and CEO Kjell Gruner. “This is also the perfect time to add another ‘America’ model to our story as we look back on 70 years since the 356 America Roadster and 30 years since the 964 America Roadster.”

As said, we find the usual setup in the rear, which is a twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre flat-six with a very healthy 353 kW (474 hp) and 570 Nm of torque available, so the America is properly fast. This special model sees some onboard systems that are usually optional extras, fitted as standard. This includes the Porsche Active Suspension Management that lowers the ride height by 10 millimeters while also adding helper springs at the rear. Also included are the Sport Exhaust and the Sport Chrono Package. The OEM brakes are in play but the calipers have been made black. In typical fashion, there are options available to push the price up, like rear-axle steering and those massive track-friendly Porsche Ceramic Composite Brakes (PCCB). The America edition isonly available in Azureblue356, a smooth blue that takes inspiration from the original 1953 356 America Roadster. To complement this hue, the America features RS Spyder Design Wheels in a custom white and silver with an added Guards Red pinstripe, The decals are in white to match and various accents are in Guards Red.

This carries on into the cabin where we find the cross-stitching finished in Guards Red and Pebble Grey on the upper dashboard, door panels and the center console armrest, which is where the word ‘America’ is embossed into the leather. There is also an optional extended interior package that sees the colour theme carried over to the steering wheel, shifter and seats. We also find bespoke illuminated door sill treadplates that commemorate the 70th anniversary of the 356 America Roadster. The first imported of the Porsche brand into America, Max Hoffman, began selling the 356 in 1950, and the car did so well that a (very) limited edition 356 America Roadster followed in 1953. This special edition totaled a mere 16 examples.
