MERCEDES-AMG CONCEPT GT XX – THE BONKERS FUTURE OF AMG PERFORMANCE

This isn’t your average AMG. Hell, it’s not even your average hyper-EV. What Mercedes-AMG has just unveiled is a razor-edged preview of the future of its performance division - one drenched in orange, loaded with space-age tech, and built around an experimental drivetrain that’s more rocket science than road car. Enter the CONCEPT AMG GT XX, a four-door all-electric hyper-saloon that’s part high-speed experiment, part design manifesto. It’s not a concept for concept’s sake; this thing is a real rolling testbed for the production car that’s scheduled to arrive in 2026. At the heart of the GT XX lies a new type of electric motor called the axial flux motor, co-developed with YASA, a British tech outfit owned by Mercedes-Benz. Unlike conventional radial motors, these are compact, ultra-light, and brutally efficient. There are three axial motors in total: two packed into a High Performance Electric Drive Unit (HP.EDU) at the rear, and a third mounted up front that acts as a booster motor when grip or extra shove is needed.

Combined, this setup delivers over 1,000 k, pushing the GT XX to speeds beyond 360 km/h - numbers usually reserved for the likes of Koenigsegg and Bugatti. And unlike most EVs, this thing isn’t a one-hit wonder. Thanks to intelligent cooling and new battery cell architecture, the performance is repeatable. Forget everything you know about EV range anxiety. AMG’s next-gen High Performance Electric Battery (HP.EB) is a ground-up design that blends F1 tech from the AMG ONE with deep EV know-how. It uses direct liquid cell cooling, high-voltage charging, and thermal management to deliver two standout feats: an average charging power of over 850 kW at 1000 amps and 400 km of range added in just five minutes.

Say what you want about the styling, but you won’t mistake the GT XX for anything else. Drenched in Sunset Beam Orange, it sits low and wide with a fastback profile and a sense of drama baked into every surface. At the nose is AMG’s signature vertical-bar grille, flanked by upright headlamps and double-decked bonnet vents. Two power domes on the hood nod to AMG’s combustion past, but everything else screams future, especially the six circular taillights that look like mini jet turbines. The silhouette is pure efficiency, with flush-fitting door handles, air-channelling side sills, and sculpted rear haunches. Around back, the MBUX Fluid Light Panel sits where a license plate would be, adding to the sci-fi vibe. And just for good measure, the car produces 111 kg of downforce at high speeds - not bad for a four-door EV.

If the outside is wild, the inside dials it up again. Gone is the traditional dashboard. Instead, the GT XX features a bare-metal-style beam with twin floating displays in a seamless-glass look. The steering wheel - clearly inspired by the AMG ONE - is a squarish racing-style unit with twin spokes, trimmed in high-tech materials. A major flex is what Mercedes calls LABFIBER - biotechnologically developed materials that replace traditional leather and silk. You’ll find recycled orange “silk” on the door pulls and bio-based black leather alternatives on the bucket seats. It’s all ultra-premium, ultra-futuristic, and tailored using 3D body scans for a made-to-measure feel. Seat pads are 3D printed, swappable, and ergonomically contoured for each driver. Underneath it all are carbon-fibre seat shells, as serious as anything found in Le Mans racers. There’s even exposed illuminated “cabling” along the centre tunnel that mimics high-voltage wires — just in case you forgot, this thing is electric. One final touch: a solid metal AMG coat of arms embedded in the centre console and backlit like a piece of jewellery. Over the top? Definitely. But it fits the mood perfectly.

Despite the wild visuals, Mercedes-AMG insists that the GT XX previews a production model coming in 2026. And while the final version may be toned down slightly for road use, the underlying tech is very real, especially the motors and battery. It may not be the kind of car you or I would blow your Lotto millions on (we’d probably opt for something with a manual gearbox and an actual exhaust note), but there’s no denying that it’s an extraordinary piece of engineering theatre.
