AMALGAM’S LATEST MODEL IS A QUARTER-SCALE FERRARI V12 THAT COSTS MORE THAN YOUR FIRST CAR

Model cars have always been a thing - from childhood playthings to display-case shelf candy for the grown-up petrolhead. But then there’s Amalgam. These folks don’t just build model cars; they craft bespoke, art-grade scale replicas of some of the world’s most exotic machines. And with prices often tipping over into full-size car territory, they’ve earned their rep as the world’s top name in model car artistry. Founded in 1985, Amalgam has worked hand-in-hand with the biggest names in the business - from Ferrari and McLaren to Bugatti and Pagani - crafting museum-grade miniatures for collectors, OEMs, and occasionally, royalty. One of their latest masterpieces is a 1:8 scale Ferrari 12Cilindri Coupe, which will set you back around R443,000. But Amalgam doesn’t stop at cars - oh no. They've now taken things to another level of detail (and budget) with a 1:4 scale replica of the 12Cilindri’s heart and soul: its legendary V12 engine and gearbox. The new Ferrari 12Cilindri is Ferrari’s latest V12 GT, a rolling tribute to Maranello’s naturally-aspirated legacy. At its core is the F140HD engine, a 6.5-litre, 830-horsepower masterpiece that revs to a screaming 9,500 rpm, paired with Ferrari’s sensational eight-speed dual-clutch transmission. This Amalgam model captures every bolt, barcode and bracket of that powertrain at 1:4 scale - which means it’s big enough to be a proper display centrepiece, yet small enough to (just barely) fit on your office desk if you push the coffee machine out of the way. Based directly on Ferrari’s official CAD data and realised in close collaboration with Ferrari Centro Stile, this isn’t just a scaled-down engine - it’s a carbon-copy tribute made for the most obsessive collectors out there.

Every material and texture from the real powertrain has been artfully recreated at scale - from the titanium-look con rods and CNC-machined surfaces to the finish on the carbon-fibre airboxes. Even the parts, stickers and warning labels are there, perfectly printed and placed like the full-size unit. The prototype model went through Ferrari’s own meticulous quality control before getting the green light. If Ferrari themselves say it’s accurate, you know it’s the real deal. The actual engine is a descendant of the same V12 DNA that has powered Ferrari’s most iconic road and race cars. It’s packed with go-fast tech: titanium con rods, lightweight pistons, a rebalanced crankshaft, and clever software that keeps the torque curve fat while the revs scream. The result? A crescendo of Ferrari fury, and while this 1:4 replica doesn’t make noise, just looking at it might still make your ears ring.

Limited to 250 Pieces — Priced Like a Passion Project

Like all Amalgam masterpieces, this Ferrari 12Cilindri Engine and Gearbox model is strictly limited - just 250 units worldwide. And as for the price? A cool $17,275 (around R303,000) nets you the ultimate piece of desk jewellery - or garage décor for the collector who already owns the full-size version and wants a mini-me version for the study. Sure, you could buy a second-hand performance hatchback for that money. But where’s the fun in that?

Take a look at the YouTube video that's related, yet not. This is an interesting and detailed look at the Ferrari 12Cilindri powerplant, but the 1:1 version, thanks to Engineering Explained's Jason Fenske: Ferrari’s Latest V12 Engine Is A Masterpiece | Engineering Explained
