So the other day we brought you the news of one of the most iconic JDM cars on the planet going up for sale, a minter of a 2000 Nissan Skyline R34 GT-R in Bayside Blue, and while they’re fetching some pretty mad prices these days, this particular one was set to bring in a whole lot more money than usual thanks to being previously owned by the actor Paul Walker. The car even starred in the movie franchise too. So for a die-hard JDM fan this thing is tantamount to the motoring version of the Holy Grail. The GT-R rolls on Volk Racing RE30 wheels in 19 inches, has a Nismo NE-1 exhaust, a custom rear roll cage, a custom dashboard-mounted PC, FIA-approved OMP racing seats (still set in Paul Walker's seating position), a Turbonetics front-mount cooler, Nismo lowering springs, an ARC titanium strut brace, a Rotora brake conversion with 6-pot calipers, a Nismo Version II bumper with side skirts, an East Bear hood, a Momo Sport Alcantara steering wheel, Nismo V-Spec pedals, an MFD Xenarc Display unit with gauges programmed to the car's ECU, and a built RB26. The sale comes with a copy of the Universal Pictures rental contract for the car as well as all the relevant provenance to prove its authenticity. The famous Nissan recently went up for auction online with Bonhams on the 28th April, and it was tipped to bring in a new record for one of these JDM icons.

In the run-up to the sale, the car pretty much went viral online, showing not only how popular the R34 GT-R is, but also the star power of Paul Walker. News of the auction could be seen on every motoring-related website worth its bandwidth, and we’re sure that also helped drive up the price a bit. When the auction was finalised on 5 May, the final offer by a private collector was a whopping $1 357 000. This figure set a new record for one of these cars that will likely not ever be seen again, it completely eclipsed the previous record set in 2022 at “just” $577 500. Maarten Ten Holder, Managing Director, Bonhams Collector Cars, said: "This is an incredible result, well-deserved for such an iconic car – not only one of the most famous contemporary automotive film stars from one of the world's biggest movie franchises, but the ultimate example of the mighty 'Godzilla'. This is a genuine piece of cinematic and modern motoring history.” Richard Stafford, Head of Research, Bonhams Collector Cars, who consigned the Skyline, said; "We were excited to have had the opportunity to offer this legendary Skyline to global car enthusiasts on behalf of its vendor and are thrilled that it has been such a box office hit, with bidding across the world.". In local terms, that’s a mere R25 441 118.43 minus taxes and shopping. Yuuuuuuuuuus.
