VOLKSWAGEN'S ID.3 GTX FIRE & ICE EDITION SHOWS THAT EV HATCHBACKS CAN BE NECKBREAKERS.

“With the ID.3 GTX FIRE+ICE, we’re dialling up the emotional side of our sportiest model. Our design team had an absolute blast putting a fresh spin on that iconic '90s look and pushing it further,” says Andreas Mindt, Head of Design at Volkswagen. This concept was born out of the passion of the Technical Development team. Much like with the original Golf Mk2 Fire and Ice, Volkswagen designers partnered with BOGNER to bring this vision to life. Tom Becker, Director of BOGNER FIRE+ICE, chimed in: “Merging our FIRE+ICE performance line with the sporty ID.3 GTX is BOGNER’s modern take on the legendary Golf Fire and Ice. What makes this collaboration unique is how we’ve infused a lot of our original materials and accessories into the vehicle’s interior.” What really sets the ID.3 GTX FIRE+ICE apart is its standout 3-layer paint job with a slick glass bead effect. The custom Electric Violet pearl effect pays homage to the Golf Mk2 Fire and Ice, but with a modern twist. Underneath the dark blue base coat lies a unique formula with glass beads that create a shifting colour effect - going from deep blue to violet to black, depending on how the light hits. The Flaming Red anodised roof frame strip gives it that extra sporty touch, while the geometric FIRE+ICE pattern, done in transparent matte, runs down the sides. And those 21-inch rims? They’re finished in a glossy, blue anodised paint, making the dynamic design pop. The original FIRE+ICE logo from the ‘90s proudly sits on the B-pillar and roof spoiler.

Inside, the cabin is a playful mix of “fire” and “ice.” Flaming Red dominates the driver’s side, including the seats and stitching, while Ice Blue cools down the passenger’s side. The pedals ditch the standard Play/Pause design, replacing them with FIRE for the accelerator and ICE for the brakes. Up top, the dash and floor mats get a slick laser-engraved FIRE+ICE pattern. Inspired by BOGNER’s FIRE+ICE collection, the interior uses various colours, fabrics, and details, like the quilted seats modelled after FIRE+ICE down jackets, complete with B-zippers. Open them up, and you’ll find the original '90s FIRE+ICE fabric underneath. Even the straps behind the front seats are borrowed from the FIRE+ICE collection’s bags. The FIRE+ICE version of the ID.3 GTX packs a serious punch with its 240 kW motor, cranking out a massive 545 Nm of torque. It hits 100 km/h in just 5.7 seconds, and while the top speed is capped at 200 km/h, you’re not exactly short on thrills. The GTX-specific chassis, fitted with beefier stabilisers and adaptive Sport DCC suspension, makes sure the handling matches the power. Juice comes from a 79 kWh lithium-ion battery, capable of fast charging at up to 185 kW. That means you can go from 10% to 80% in just 26 minutes, with a WLTP range of up to 601 km. The original Golf Mk2 “Fire and Ice” edition hit the scene in 1990 as a special blend of sportiness and comfort, created alongside fashion icon Willy Bogner. With its bold dark violet pearl effect paint, alloys, and body styling, the car was a standout, and the powerful 90 to 160 PS engine made it a must-have. What started as a limited run of 10,000 units turned into a surprise hit, with 16,700 units sold in total. A rare gem, especially in GTI form.
