IT'S USA VS GERMANY IN THIS PERFORMANCE SHOOTOUT - N/A 'STANG VS M2 COMP - PLACE YOUR BETS.

The 2024 Ford Mustang GT is a modern interpretation of an American icon, blending classic muscle car aesthetics with cutting-edge technology while retaining that all-important V8 growl. Just ask Mercedes-AMG how important it is, or check out the sales figures of the new one with a turbocharged 4-pot as its ICE component. Under the hood is a potent normally aspirated 5.0-litre V8 engine that delivers a cool 362 kW and 567 Nm of torque, and that power is directed to the rear wheels through either a 6-speed manual transmission or a 10-speed auto. The Ford Mustang has been the world’s most popular sportscar for a few years in a row now, helped along by finally creating a right-hooker version so that it could be sold in all markets - a truly global model. If this was done before 2015, who knows how much more popular the car would be, and how much further along the development would have gone. There’s that old saying about American cars only being good in a straight line, but these days there are some properly fast US cars that can more than hold their own on track, luckily for this Carwow test, Mat and crew only need to go in a straight line as fast as possible. A Mustang is at home on the quarter mile, so much so that the onboard computer has a built-in digital start line tree and timer that will measure a standing quarter. This means drivers can get in as much practice as they need to be able to launch with a quick reaction time and to learn the optimal shift points for maximum performance. In this test, it was more of a hands-drop/foot-flat scenario. While the ‘Stang is a great performer, somehow it feels like it shouldn’t be able to compete with the most compact ///M car to date - the BMW M2 Competiton. It must be all the marketing or the fact that M cars have been in SA for many years and have become the de facto performance benchmark.

In this USA vs Germany match-up, the BMW M2 Competition is actually a perfect car to test against the Mustang. It has slightly less power at 358 kW, but with power coming from a turbocharged inline-6, torque is better at 600Nm of torque. They use either a 6-speed manual transmission or a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic, and the power is also sent to the rear wheels. One thing that was a surprise is the weight of these cars, we’d always assumed the Pony Car was a heavy thing, it tips the scales at 1,738 kg, but the M2 we assumed to be a lighter car is heavier at 1,805 kg. Who knew? So the Mustang has more power, slightly less weight and slightly less torque, but the stats should more than even themselves out. In this drag race, with such evenly matched cars, a lot comes down to the drive modes, the way the car can get off the line, and of course, driver skill. Luckily in these tests, the chaps at the wheel know what they’re doing. Mat even has some world records under his belt thanks to how he made that mad McMurty EV perform on camera. The Mustang is more affordable to, on this side of the pond the thing is listed at around R1,300,000, while the BMW M2 Competition is a little under R1,600,000. All of a sudden the Ford looks like a very attractive offering. But before you put down your deposit and mortgage the house, it’s worth checking this video out to give you that piece of mind about making the right choice.

Take a look at the YouTube video from the chaps who have all the fun. This time its the world's best-selling sportscar in the form of the Mustang GT pitted up against one of the coolest ///M cars to date, the compact yet brutal BMW M2 Comp.
