NEW US ROAD LAW ALLOWS FOR FULLY AUTONOMOUS VEHICLES
This new rule that has been implemented by the US road law authority allows for fully autonomous vehicles without steering wheels or pedals.
The NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) in the US has officially tweaked their laws around cars having a fully manual override to meet crash safety standards in the US that now allows for more autonomous vehicles to be fully road legal.
This has come about as many car manufacturers such as GM and Tesla have been putting a lot of pressure on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to amend their current laws as both GM and Tesla have said openly that they intend on making fully autonomous vehicles at a higher level than what is currently available such as Tesla's Autopilot self-driving feature.
The NHTSA stated: US regulations on Thursday issued final rules eliminating the need for automated vehicle manufacturers to equip fully autonomous vehicles with manual driving controls to meet crash stands.
This new law now allows for manufacturers to sell fully autonomous vehicles that don't require a steering wheel or even pedals to meet the crash safety standards in the US.
So in the very near future, we may see Tesla's and other autonomous self-driving cars being sold without steering wheels or even pedals. The only issue is convincing customers to trust this new technology and feel comfortable being driven around purely on AI.
There are advantages to this though, imagine the amount of free time you will have to catch up on work while you commute, or even take it easy and watch your favourite Netflix show as you're being driven about.
Or even on a more commercial level, companies such as Uber or local Taxi organisations will no longer have to employ drivers, your taxi will simply arrive by itself and you get in and get taken to wherever you need to go without having a stranger in the car.
This all seems good and well, but judging from our point of view, it's still going to be quite a while until fully autonomous cars will be the norm, but it is most definitely coming and is going to be the future of the automotive industry whether we like it or not.
