A PAIR OF MUSTANGS IN A SMOKEY MOUNTAIN TOUGE BATTLE IS CRAZY COOL!

Ten years back I was in Spain with Monster Energy to attend a round of Gymkhana GRiD, and I had the opportunity to meet Vaughn Gittin Jr. and interview the man. Proper character, and that night after the event we hit the town and some memories and a hangover were created. Back then the man was already at the top of his game, and his drifting exploits and mad ideas for videos have increased tenfold since then. This latest video is great because it’s the kind of entertainment we’re addicted to, and seeing a pair of competition RTR Mustangs being driven in anger on a mountain pass through a forest in Wilkesboro, North Carolina in a legit touge battle is pure automotive porn. A drift battle in between trees on a road without barriers is crazy, it takes a super helping of courage after months of planning. Touge = madness. Oh, and just a reminder, (峠, tōge) is a Japanese term, the literal meaning is “pass.” and it refers to a mountain pass or any narrow, winding roads found in and around the mountains of Japan. It’s where and how the sport of drifting originated.

Vaughn Gittin Jr. was accompanied by Chelsea DeNofa for this touge battle in the NC mountains in their RTR Spec 5-D Mustangs, and there are few tools for the job that are as good as this. The Spec 5 RTR Mustang is quite the beast, the 5.0-litre V8 Coyote powerplant is fitted with a 3.0-litre 615TQ Stage 1 Whipple Supercharger System that takes the power up to a nice and fat 750 hp with 843 Nm of torque that makes keeping these wild horses sideways a much easier affair. RTR also bumps up the visuals with a whole host of aero and of course, suspension upgrades with an RTR Tactical Performance Coilover Suspension System. The RT 20-inch wheels are a great finishing touch, although these cars wear different wheels as they’re proper competition cars and so swap and change wheels and tyres like most guys change their undies. A Mustang touge battle is also a great way to show off the cars and driving skills, a perfect advertisement for products along with inspiration for the legions of fans both drivers have.
