IT'S A 600 HP VS 600 HP VOLKSWAGEN GOLF DRAG RACE - BUT IT'S DIESEL VS PETROL.
When it comes to internal combustion engines, the battle between diesel and petrol has always been a hot topic. While they both work on the principle of converting fuel into mechanical energy through combustion, the way they achieve this differs significantly, affecting performance, efficiency, and the way they make power. At their core, petrol engines rely on spark ignition, where an air-fuel mixture is compressed and ignited by a spark plug. This process happens quickly, and petrol engines typically rev higher, delivering smooth, linear power. On the other hand, diesel engines operate using compression ignition. Diesel fuel is injected into highly compressed air, where the heat from compression ignites the mixture. This allows diesels to achieve higher compression ratios, resulting in greater torque output, especially at lower engine speeds. The difference is evident in how these engines generate their power. Petrol engines excel at producing horsepower, which is why they shine in high-revving, performance-oriented applications. Diesel engines, however, are masters of torque, providing immense pulling power that's perfect for towing, heavy loads, or in scenarios where grunt matters more than outright speed. So, what happens when you level the playing field and give each engine 600 hp?
That’s what the crazy chaps from UK-based Officially Gassed decided to test by pitting a monstrous diesel 2-door Mk4 Golf TDi against a high-strung, properly modified petrol-powered Mk7 Golf R. While both churn out the same peak power, the delivery, sound, and driving characteristics couldn’t be more different. While the cars are equal in the power stakes, the newer-generation dog in this fight does have a bit of a technical advantage because it has that brilliant Halxed all-wheel drive system as part of its OEM make up, while the Mk4 retains its OEM setup in the form of a front-wheel drive setup. The two cars are incredibly close in performance, with the Golf R having a slight advantage in acceleration and the Golf TDI having a slight advantage in top speed. The video features a best-of-three drag race, which is the right way to do these things. Unless of course the results end up really close and the guys decide to go for a best of 5, best of 7 etc. That’s not the case here though. Before you watch the madness from Officially Gassed, what is your prediction for the outcome of this pairing? Myself? Well because I drive a Mk4 GTi daily, I’m giving my allegiance to the TDi, even though it’s a different setup to what I have. I have to support the one I like the most. On the other hand, I do want my next VW to be a Mk7 GTi, so I do want to see the 7 run well. Not too well though. Usually with equal power, a lot of the drive comparison depends on the skills and reactions of the drivers, but these guys seem to have more than enough experience. Go Mk4!
Take a look at the YouTube video that shows off what happens when you pit a 600 hp diesel car up against a 600 hp petrol guzzler. Our money is on the MK4, but we're a little biased: PETROL vs DIESEL.. NITROUS MK4 GOLF TDI vs FORGED MK7 GOLF R | Officially Gassed
