RUN, WE DARE YOU - THE AC SCHNITZER TUNE IT! SAFE! THIS BMW M2 POLICE CAR IS NEXT-LEVEL COOL.
When it comes to blending proper performance upgrades with everyday driveability, few names carry the same weight as AC Schnitzer. With 37 years of tuning expertise, this German icon has transformed countless BMWs into track-worthy beasts while keeping them street-legal. But their latest creation adds a twist - it's a full-blown police car designed to promote legal tuning practices. Enter the TUNE IT! SAFE! Police BMW M2, a rolling showcase of AC Schnitzer’s commitment to innovation, performance, and compliance. AC Schnitzer, founded in 1987 in Aachen, Germany, started as a subsidiary of Schnitzer Motorsport, a powerhouse in touring car racing. Co-founders Willi Kohl and Herbert Schnitzer combined motorsport engineering with business acumen to build a tuning empire. Their early projects, such as the iconic BMW E30 3 Series, set benchmarks for enhanced performance and bespoke styling, and they've been pushing boundaries ever since. Today, AC Schnitzer operates globally, crafting components so refined they often leave BMW’s factory warranties intact. This ethos of excellence drives their latest collaboration with the TUNE IT! SAFE! campaign, a German initiative under the patronage of the Federal Ministry of Digital and Transport. Its mission? To show enthusiasts how to modify cars safely and legally without compromising on performance or style. So with that in mind, what you see here is a pretty well-modified M2. The AC Schnitzer-tuned M-car swaps its already potent factory output for a next-level experience that in any other country would be the boss of the road, but this is Germany and there are loads of fast cars, because Autobahn. The standard 338 kW and 550 Nm 3.0-litre S58 inline-six gets pushed to 412 kW and 650 Nm, thanks to the ACS package.
The rest of the upgrades to the new Popo car include an AC Schnitzer exhaust system with valve control and carbon sport tailpipes, an RS adjustable suspension fine-tuned on the Nürburgring and public roads to allow infinite height adjustments, along with compression and rebound tweaks, lowering the car by 25-35 mm for optimal balance, and AC4 lightweight forged wheels to reduce unsprung mass and gyroscopic forces, making the car more agile. These TechGold-finished rims measure 20 inches up front and 21 inches at the rear, paired with Hankook Ventus S1 EVO 3 tyres for superior grip. For a car doubling as a public service ambassador, aerodynamics isn’t just about looks. AC Schnitzer’s aero package significantly increases downforce and includes a front splitter and side wings generating an additional 60 kg of downforce up front, a carbon racing rear wing with a Gurney flap and a rear roof spoiler to keep the M2 planted at high speeds. A redesigned diffuser and design stickers on the bonnet complete the look, proving that form and function can coexist just right. Inside, AC Schnitzer makes sure the TUNE IT! SAFE! M2 is as stylish as it is functional and features enlarged aluminium shift paddles for precision gear changes, aluminium pedals, footrest, and iDrive controller cover, alongside a custom key holder. The TUNE IT! SAFE! Police BMW M2 isn’t just about flaunting AC Schnitzer’s tuning prowess, even though it does that in spades, it’s a moving billboard for safe, legal modifications, showing what’s possible when creativity meets compliance. Backed by sponsors, this initiative demonstrates how high-performance tuning can coexist with stringent road regulations - Germany is known to be super-strict - setting an example for enthusiasts worldwide.
